If you have spent any time browsing stone showrooms or scrolling through kitchen inspiration, you have almost certainly encountered both marble and quartzite. They look remarkably similar at first glance, but the two materials differ in origin, durability, maintenance requirements, and cost.

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep within the earth. That geological process gives marble its characteristic veining, translucency, and soft luster.

Quartzite, despite its confusingly similar name to engineered quartz, is also a natural stone. It begins life as sandstone and transforms under heat and pressure into an extremely hard, dense metamorphic rock.

Durability is where the two materials diverge most dramatically. Marble is a relatively soft stone that is susceptible to scratching, etching, and staining. Quartzite resists scratching and etching far better.

Maintenance requirements follow directly from durability. Marble countertops should be sealed upon installation and resealed every six to twelve months.

Cost is another important consideration. In the Bay Area market, marble countertops typically range from seventy-five to two hundred fifty dollars per square foot installed.
